今日は、『聞く』という意味の動詞listenを紹介します。

【わびさび wabisabi】
According to the teachings of Buddhism, "All things always change."
This leads to interpreting feelings of loneliness and solitude as having a form of beauty.
The calmness found in Japanese temples and shrines, gardens, and works of art is said to be an expression of wabisabi beauty.
『仏教には、「物事は常に移り変わっていくものだ」という考えがあります。

【はかない hakanai】
The word hakanai refers to a situation where something has almost completely disappeared from view.
This concept also comes from the Buddhist concept of an everchangeing word.
The beaytiful sight of all the cherry-blossom petals falling to the ground not long after they have bloomed is referred to as hakanai.
『「はかない」とは、物事が今にも消えてなくなりそうな様子を表わす言葉です。
これも仏教で言われる「物事の移り変わり」をもとにした考え方です。
一斉に開花した後、短期間で散ってしまう桜の花の美しさを「はかない」と表すこともあります。』

【風流 furyu】
In the past, furyu was used to refer to poems, paintings, tea ceremony and other arts.
But now it is used to describe a sense of elegance and calmness.
For example, furyu is used to explain the experience of quietly listening to the sound of a stream while viewing the beautiful red and yellow leaves of autumn.
『「風流」はかつて、詩歌や書画、茶道などの芸術を指す言葉でした。
現在では、優雅で落ち着いた趣のある様子を表わすときに用います。
例えば、川のせせらぎを聞きながら、赤や黄色に美しく色づいた紅葉を静かに眺める様子を「風流だ」と表現します。

【おくゆかしい okuyukashii】
Okuyukashii describes an attitude of elegance and humility.
It is used mostly when referring to the personality and characteristics of a woman.
In the past, the odeal woman was said to have an okuyukashii air, but today when many Japanese women seem so full of energy, in some cases this term might be more apt for men.
『「おくゆかしい」は上品でつつしみ深い様子や態度を表わす言葉で、主に女性の性格や態度について用いられます。
かつて日本では、おくゆかしさを持つ女性が理想とされていましたが、エネルギッシュな女性が多い昨今、この言葉は男性により相応しいことがあるかもしれません。』
